SoCon Tournament Continues Friday at Fluor Field

Greenville, SC – Western Carolina baseball looks to rebound on Friday evening as it awaits its next opponent in the 2022 weather -changed Southern Conference Baseball Championship provided by Holston Gases. Play is scheduled to resume Friday morning with four games on tap at Fluor Field in the West End.

Bad weather caused SoCon officials to change the tournament schedule, turning a game scheduled for Thursday into a Wednesday schedule that took two days of games and turned it into the first game format of two, four. Catamounts split a non-traditional doubleheader there, advancing to the double elimination bracket by upending No. seven rounds in the nightcap on four games.

WCU fell on the losing bracket in the conference tournament and requires three wins to move into the conference tournament the championship game needs two more wins for its program of 11 crown tournaments.

Western Carolina (26-30-1) awaited a loser Friday at 9 a.m. in a championship bracket game between top-seed Wofford and No. 4 seed UNCG, which rallied over No. 8 The Citadel to win their third game Friday in walk-off fashion. The game is scheduled for approximately 4 p.m. on Friday at Fluor Field and will be broadcast on ESPN + (paid subscription required) with live stats available online at CatamountSports.com.

Anyone facing WCU on Friday evening, there will be some familiarity as the Catamounts face the Terriers and Spartans in the last two regular season series. The Catamounts split three regular-season meetings with Wofford, the No. 1 seed at Spartanburg, falling in the opener, 15-4, before rallying behind a full-game pitching effort from Gavin Mortenson even a series with a 9-2 victory there. The end of Sunday’s series experienced some long weather delays before being stopped by a 2-2 draw after seven full rounds.

WCU closed the regular season with a home sweep by UNCG, defeated by a combined 29-for-18 in a three-game set. The Catamounts dropped an 8-2 opener before losing 5-3 in the second game. The end of the regular season saw WCU clear all but two 10-run deficits and finally retreat during the race before the fall, 16-13.

Over the first two games of the Southern Conference Tournament, the Catamounts were played by rookies Brandon Butterworth with four singles in 4-for-6 efforts (.667) with several runs scoring. Sophomore Pascanel Ferreras picked up where he left off in last year’s event, starting the tournament 3-for-5 (.600) with a double and a home run, adding three runs to bolster a .750 percent on base. WCU has also doubled from Zach Ketterman, Bryson Parksand Seth Graveswho has led home teams — at least three including two coming on the sacrifice flight.

In the bare, Zebby Matthews struck out seven over 6.1 inning relief effort against the Keydets after the start Zach Franklin punched out six over 2.2 innings with Mortenson striking out four over 2.1 innings in the start against Samford. WCU used eight different pitchers during the first two games of the conference tournament.

Western Carolina vs. Wofford – All -Time Series:

Western Carolina led the all-time series with Wofford 75-26-1, splitting the 2022 regular season with wins, losses, and a series. WCU scored three straight wins over the Terriers last season among eight meetings in 2021 as the Terriers took 2-of-3 from WCU at Spartanburg and at Cullowhee in division games before the Catamounts rode momentum to win three games of the series at Cullowhee to down Wofford in two meetings at the SoCon tournament in Greenville, SC

Western Carolina is 5-0 all-time against Wofford in the SoCon Tournament including twice beating the top-seeded Terriers on the 2021 tour.

Western Carolina vs UNCG – All -Time Series:

WCU trailed UNCG in all-time series history, 36-44, including three direct losses during the 2022 regular season at Cullowhee … The Spartans have won six of their last 10 series meetings between two rivals in the state.

Catamounts vs UNCG – SoCon Tournament:

Western Carolina and UNCG only met five times before in the SoCon tournament, following the series, 2-3 … Catamounts overcame a drought without winning three games by twice beating top-ranked UNCG at the 2018 tournament in Greenville, SC, which also marked the most meetings new in the postseason.
