The full moon of June is the second supermoon of four consecutive supermoons, where the full moon of the month coincides with the moon at or near its perigee, the point closest to Earth in its monthly orbit. A supermoon can appear larger than a full moon when it is farthest from Earth (NASA has said. (opens in new tab) can be seen up to 30% brighter and 17% larger), but will not look any different to a casual observer.
June’s Full Strawberry Supermoon will occur on Tuesday at 7:51 am EDT (1151 GMT), but the moon will appear full moon to observers the day before and after the actual event. Be free to watch the shining moon from June 13-15. The name “strawberry” comes from the short strawberry harvest season.
The June full moon will be the lowest moon in 2022, with the moon rising just 23.3 degrees above the southern horizon in early June 15 for observers in Washington, DC, NASA said. This is because it will come before the summer solstice on June 21st.
“On the summer solstice, the sun appears highest in the sky during the year,” NASA wrote in the guide (opens in new tab). “The full moon is opposite the sun, so the full moon near the summer solstice will descend in the sky.”
The full moon is one of the easiest stargazing events to observe and a good target for amateur astronomers who are just starting to observe with binoculars or telescopes.
