PROVO, Utah – BYU Basketball has officially announced Kahil Fennell as the new assistant coach on Mark Pope’s staff.
Fennell came to BYU through Louisville where he served as a full -time assistant coach for one season. Prior to a year as an assistant, Fennell was Director of Basketball Operations for the Cardinals for three seasons.
As BYU prepared for the Big 12 Conference, Fennell brought an important Power Six experience to the bench. He signed for Chris Burgess who went on to become an assistant coach at the University of Utah.
Fennell joined four -year assistants Cody Fueger and Nick Robinson to complete BYU’s assistant coaching staff.
“With our last year at the WCC and our next move to the Big 12, it’s an incredible time for BYU basketball,” said BYU basketball coach Mark Pope. “We have done three historic years and we are determined to get better. Kahil Fennell makes us better. He is an excellent communicator, an elite level recruiter and has an unparalleled work ethic. Cougar Nation will love Kahil, his wife. Sarah and her two sons, Ezra and Koa. Let’s go! “
The current task for the Fennell and BYU bracelets is to fill the two remaining scholarships available for the 2022-23 to-do list. BYU has signed the transfers of Coastal Carolina Rudi Williams and Donda Academy’s Braeden Moore this spring.
Farmington Heralded Guard Collin Chandler signed on last November but he will be on a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints before enrolling at BYU.
Fennell became a basketball coach in 2014, ten years after completing his playing career at the University of Redlands in California. Before entering basketball again, Fennell sold medical devices in Oakland, California.
Fennell started at Alameda High School in California and then quickly became a college coach after one season in the prep ranks. He joined the University of Texas Division II of the Permian Basin.
Then five years ago, Fennell became an assistant on Barrett Peery’s first staff at Portland State.
After a season with Peery at Portland State, Fennell joined the Louisville Cardinals program. When hiring Fennell in 2018, former Louisville head coach Chris Mack called Fennell “a fast rise in college basketball.”
Last season, BYU finished 24-11 by coming out in the NIT quarterfinals. The Cougars will play the 2022-23 season at the West Coast Conference before moving to the Big 12 for the 2023-24 season.
